Blog Tips

I learnt a couple of new tips this week which hopefully will make my blogging easier and a little more fun.

1. How to add splashes of colour to Black and White Images

The older I get the more of a need I have to manipulate images. I have been looking for a program that would allow me to add splashes of colour to black and white photos without having to buy an Apple product or Photoshop.

And I found one. It's called GIMP which is free and safe to download.

Original photo of my niece Erin
This is the image I converted to black and white with a splash of colour using GIMP (I need to work on the blue a little more to make it more realistic)

GIMP is an acronym for GNU Image Manipulation Program. It is a freely distributed program for such tasks as photo retouching, image composition and image authoring.

It can be used as a simple paint program, an expert quality photo retouching program, an online batch processing system, a mass production image renderer, an image format converter, etc.

All I know is that it can do everything from the simplest task as above to the most complex image manipulation. I can envisage a dummies guide to How to look like Angelina Jolie in a few easy keystrokes - my book will be out soon.

This was made for me by Ugich at  Gappa

Of course if you know of any better program please let us know. And thanks to beautiful Erin for allowing me to use her image for a good cause and Ugich for my new book cover.

2. How to find out how fast your blog takes to load

My daughter told me my blog takes forever to load so I thought I better try and fix it otherwise first time visitors will not be hanging around to read anything. I was completely unaware that it takes 12 seconds for my page to download the first time and 2 seconds thereafter for subsequent downloads. That is way too long for first time visitors.

There are various ways you can check how long your site takes to download. Google has some great tips here how to optimise download times.

However, there are two sites I found really useful because they diagnose the problems. Websiteoptimization.com and Google's page speed siteBoth analyse your site and give you advice about which items need to be fixed as a priority.

I have a lot of work to do. It is a shame that I love using images on my blog.....but they take a long time to download...

                      ___________________________________________

And finally, I hope all my blogging friends in the USA are safe and secure given the horrific impact of Hurricane Sandy. My thoughts and prayers are with you all.  Are you ok?

Would you buy perfume from this man?

And I am asking men and women for an opinion on this.

William Bradley Pitt
I was wandering the City yesterday and happened to see these large Chanel advertisements featuring Brad Pitt. Sorry the photo is a little blurry - I found it incredibly hard to focus on such a pretty picture.

I automatically assumed it must be about a new men's fragrance.

Then I looked closer and noticed two things.

First, Brad had not been photoshopped at all and is wearing his age lines well. Second, this was actually an ad for Chanel No 5 perfume. Women's perfume.

I am so used to seeing Chanel’s incredible arty creative campaigns, which I really love, featuring the likes of Nicole Kidman, that my curiosity was well and truly piqued.

So I walked into the Chanel store and asked the obvious question.

Why is Brad Pitt fronting the Chanel No 5 advertising campaign?

I am not sure the sales associate understood either. However, she did tell me that a surprising number of men had come into the store and asked whether they could buy the fragrance - for themselves.

Chanel seems to be appealing to a market they may not have expected.
Men.  Let's hope the sales associates can turn that around and convince the men to buy it for their partners.

I am a Chanel perfume wearer so perhaps I am not a good person to judge the worthiness of this campaign. You see, I would buy Chanel No 5 even if Mickey Mouse or Shrek were the brand's spokesmen.

I then googled the campaign and found the television advertisement which I haven't seen here yet.

I'm not entirely sure what Brad was on about or what it all meant. He looked and sounded particularly intelligent though if that counts.

The ad's impact has been mixed with he (and Chanel) receiving a lot of ribbing about the ads.

The commercial was spoofed by Saturday Night Live less than a week after its debut, and both Pitt's version and the parodies are racking up millions of views online. Like this parody from Australian, Natalie Tran. (Readers have also added other links in the comments section below. They are hilarious.)

Men selling perfume is a tricky thing. In the past, brands like Windsong and Incognito used men effectively in their perfume advertising, but always with women who were indulging in applying the perfume. However, given it is rumoured that Brad was paid $7m for his spokesman role, Chanel probably couldn't afford Angelina too.

It’s a historic choice for the house of Chanel, whose No. 5 fragrance is a bestseller and has maintained its iconic status since its 1921 release.

I like what Chanel's president for fragrance and beauty Andrea d'Avack said  though “To keep a legend fresh, you always have to change its point of view.”

It is probably about time advertising was turned on its head a bit and we ditched the old stereotypes. Who knows, maybe Chanel No 5 will go on to attract a much broader market and even become a unisex fragrance. Now that would be legendary.

So tell me, whether you are a Chanel wearer or not, could Brad Pitt sell you perfume?

Oui or Non.

More of a lesson in Humanity

than one in British History.

I was walking round and round the supermarket this morning frustratedly looking for the very last item on my list.

I passed an older couple and glanced at them briefly and smiled.

The woman smiled back and then walked purposely towards me and placed both of her hands on my trolley. I was taken aback and wondered if she had mistaken me for someone else.

She was beautifully dressed with expertly applied makeup and was, I guess, in her mid to late 60s. I looked around and noticed her husband hurriedly walking off in the other direction and around the corner out of sight.

She moved closer to me and held her face uncomfortably close to mine. She looked me up and down and said, “You are very tall my dear, did you know that?” I smiled and said, "Yes, I do know that but I quite like being tall as I can always reach the top shelves.”

She laughed, her eyes as big as saucers. I quickly realised that there was an underlying problem, the nature of which became more transparent with every word she spoke.

Lost in my thoughts for a few seconds I wondered why I had given up online shopping and why the hell this kind of thing always happens to me.  She tightly squeezed my arm to get my attention again.

She asked me if I had heard of Scotland. Her voice increased in volume and a few passers by turned to stare at us. I told her that funnily enough I had lived there for some time.

"Do you have a Scottish husband?" she asked. She then told me she was born in Edinburgh but had made the mistake of marrying 'one of those ghastly Poms" (Englishman).

I tried walking away hoping her husband, whom I assumed to be the ghastly Pom, wasn't too far away. She followed behind me asking if I knew how the Scots managed to beat the English during their many wars. She laughed raucously and told me that the Scots wore their kilts into battle but they did not wear anything under them. She said that when they lifted up their skirts, the English were so frightened by their huge penises that they had no choice but to retreat.

All at the top of her voice.

I laughed a little awkwardly and looked around trying to find her husband. I finally found him hovering in a nearby aisle, red faced and no doubt wondering how it was all going to end.

I tried to reassure him that she was fine and that she was helping me find a grocery item I was looking for. She told him that I was looking for a drink that I could pour into an ice cream cone. He winked at me and suggested that I might find such a product in the ice cream section.

She then grabbed his hand tightly in hers. She told me that her husband was very smart for an Englishman, that he had four computers and that he was now working as a paratrooper.

He looked at me, shook his head and the colour instantly drained from his face.

He then burst into tears.

It clearly was the straw that broke the camel's back. I was not sure what to do. She was totally oblivious to his grief and happily prattled on about his non existent life as a paratrooper.

I touched his arm, asked him if he was alright and checked if there was anything I could do.

He said he was fine.

This couple reminded me of something important today. And no, strangely enough, it was nothing to do with the Scottish Wars of Independence. It was something a little more profound.

Carers are our unsung heroes and they have a huge battle to contend with. Many are fighting their wars alone.

Today I made a pledge to do something more for the Carers of this world. A gift, some flowers, a kind word, a meal, a few hours adult/child sitting, a donation, a phone call, whatever, just something positive to show a bit more care.

And with that, Ernie, Sonia and I shared a cup of coffee and had a good chat. About wars, Scotsmen and all manner of varied topics that she wanted to cover.

I say go and hug a Carer that you may know today. This week. This month. Whenever. Just do it.

They truly need all the support they can get to fight the never ending and relentless battle they face day in and day out.

Some quick statistics from the Australian Bureau of Statistics:

2.6 million unpaid carers in Australia more than 770,000 carers are primary carers
300,000 carers are under the age of 24
150,000 carers are under the age of 18
over 1.5 million carers are of working age (18-64)
31,600 Indigenous carers are over the age of 15
520,000 carers are over 65 years of age
estimated annual replacement value of care provided in 2012 is over $40.9 billion
it is estimated that carers provided 1.32 billion hours of unpaid care in 2010 with productivity loss estimated at $6.5 billion
On average carers spend approximately 40 hours per week providing care. It is estimated that carers of someone with a mental illness spend on average 104 hours per week in the caring role.

Hot Topics: Lance, Lies and the Law

"I'll say to the people who don't believe, the cynics and the sceptics: I'm sorry for you. I'm sorry you don't believe in miracles.”

And so said Lance Armstrong when he celebrated his record-breaking seventh Tour de France title in 2005.
Do you suppose that Lance truly believed in his own spin as much as he hoped the rest of the world would?

Fortunately, the truth always has an uncanny habit of working itself free.
And just like the most accomplished snake oil salesmen, Lance's miracle was not all it was cracked up to be.
The heavy weight of evidence from the USA Anti-doping Agency (USADA)effectively calls him a cheat, a master manipulator and a fraud.
He doped before cancer; he doped after cancer; he doped through his glory years; and he doped in his comeback. His blood values in his valedictory 2009 and 2010 Tours, state an expert, had "less than a one in a million chance" of being natural.
He is now viewed as the ring leader in one of sport's most sophisticated drug scandals. The instigator of a massive and long-running scheme to cover tracks, tarnish reputations, lie to hearing panels and the press and do whatever was necessary to conceal the truth.

He fought like hell to keep the truth from surfacing. He sued anyone who even hinted he used drugs. The London Times, for example, had to pay him one million dollars in damages after a long running court case. At the time of that case there was no hard evidence.

I understand that there are people who have no conscience and use everyone around them as pawns in their corrupt games.  That is how the world turns.

I also understand why people want to believe in fairy tales. Lance's comeback from cancer to dominate the world's toughest bike race really was a wonderful and inspirational story. I believed him didn't you?

If we went through life not having belief in people it would be a wretched existence. Most of us treat others well and try to see the good in people. Many of us are raised with ideals, religious or otherwise, of forgiveness and non-judgment. And most of us make mistakes and admit it.

It is quite sad though that many, many people knew the truth about Armstrong and never said one word. They kept his secret and they helped him cover it up in all manner of ways. Why? Why are human beings so gutless at times? He had politicians and large corporations defend him and many supporters who acted as his drug mules. Why do people choose to “look the other way” or to “sit on the fence and do nothing” and enable evil people to continue to manipulate, abuse and hurt others? I do not get that bit of the equation at all. And I do regard his actions as evil.

I am glad that each of his team mates finally came forward and told the truth. And as the USADA says, "Collectively, these athletes, if forgiven and embraced, have a chance to leave a legacy far greater for the good of the sport than anything they ever did on a bike."

However, Lance Armstrong will never admit the truth even though his empire is falling down around him. Maybe this mega fraud will be instrumental in changing the way we view our sporting heroes. Athletes are human beings not machines. And it is about time we stopped giving them millions of dollars to try and beat the clock and ultimately the law as well.

Some mistakes you just cannot and should not wipe away. Let's hope they are a lesson for everybody.

My dog days are over

It's already been proven on this blog that I am definitely no dog whisperer.

There was this time and then there was that shameful time as well.

However today I thought that it was all going to change.

I was walking along the street and noticed a guy come out of a strange looking building and walk quickly up the road.

Soon after he left, this wee fur ball appeared at the window.

Talk about puppy love. How cute is he?

He looked over at us then he looked down the street perhaps to make sure his owner was safely out of sight. I stood still, curious to see what he would do.  He looked just like a teenager ready to hotfoot it as soon as their parents leave the house.

Is he gone? Looks like it..... woo hoo...Oops not quite...act casual....la de da de da.

And what followed?

The adorable little creature jumped over the ledge, and hotfooted it to the cafe next door. Then he leapt onto an outdoor table and took some poor kid's lunch off her plate.
He then took off down the street followed by trails of lettuce, tomato, onion and beetroot.

I ran after him trying to catch him - which meant not only did he have time to eat the whole hamburger but he could have also ordered dessert and relaxed with his feet up over a cappuccino if he felt so inclined.   Now you can laugh..and ask why...it's not like I was going to rescue a hamburger was it...

Look at his fat and full cheeks. After his junk food fix, he went back home.  Probably to play computer games.

He is in need of a hair cut and bath, no doubt always hungry, engages in risky behaviour, looks like butter wouldn't melt in his mouth, doesn't listen to a word anyone says, lauds it over little kids and knows that no-one is fast enough to catch him. Yep, so very like a few teenagers I know (and have also chased down the street, for similar outcomes I have to say).
Can you find the hamburger?

This is the last time I will be cooing and fawning over anything cute and photogenic. My dog days are well and truly over.  So in that case, would you like to see a couple of cute cat pictures? You know I have them.

                              ________________________________________

Did you know that Coffee is the second most valuable commodity in the World next to petroleum?

I guess its hardly surprising when you look at the City I live and its strong cafe culture. Coffee is integral to most people's socialising.  The choice of great coffee abounds and it inspires passion and addiction in many of us.

Regardless of how you like your coffee and the ritual that may surround it, there is something to be said for its slow savouring - alone or sharing it in the company of others. Our individual coffee experiences are unique and personal.

When I was offered the opportunity to try the new Limited Edition NESCAFÉ Gold Single Origin Colombian Blend soluble coffee I jumped at the chance.

For one reason only.

This coffee is made from 100% Colombian Arabica coffee beans and there are only 5,000 packs exclusively available online in Australia.

It is pretty special. My daughter recently went to South America and had her own unique Colombian coffee experience on a farm in Salento. I have been interested in Colombian coffee since.

The area is beautiful. Just look at the jaw dropping scenery.

Colombia is the biggest producer of Arabica coffee which is known to be the best of the coffee beans. It has lots of flavour and has low caffeine and acidity levels. The coffee is grown at high altitudes where the temperature and soil are perfect for coffee beans to develop and mature. Most of it is grown in small family owned plantations where the farmers pick the coffee by hand, one cherry at a time. They take great care harvesting their coffee crops.

Trying this NESCAFE coffee is probably the closest I will ever get to Colombia and the authentic Colombian coffee experience. Some coffee lovers, it seems, are far more adventurous than others....

So 15,000 kilometres away from these coffee farms, I was ready to have my own Colombian coffee experience.  When I received the NESCAFÉ Gold coffee and an inspirational hamper, I decided to have a get together with friends and family to do a group tasting. As well as tasting the coffee they also tested my 'coffee creations'.

I made a Walnut Coffee Cake, coffee cream topped scones (yum!), coffee cream chocolates, iced coffees (with coffee ice cubes), coffee iced cupcakes - there are so many ways to use coffee other than just drinking it. We all had a lot of fun sharing this very Australian Colombian coffee experience. And none of us had to trek up any mountains on horseback to get our 100% Colombian coffee fix, unlike some coffee drinkers we know.
My Colombian Coffee experience

And the Verdict?
I love the aroma, the taste and the fact it is not overpowering. It was also great in the goods I baked. Everyone was pleasantly surprised that the "soluble coffee could taste so real" (Melbournites and their coffee!).

Here are a few comments from others, "I like that it is not overpowering". "It doesn't have that bitter taste you get with most coffees". "It's got a classic aroma." "This tastes like real, normal coffee." "It is earthy tasting." "Rounded finish but I thought it lacked a bit of taste upfront." "Smells like real coffee and is very strong in a good way."

THE GIVEAWAY

The Winner will receive a pack of the luxurious Limited Edition NESCAFÉ Gold Single Origin Colombian Blend (RRP $10) PLUS a Lilly's Life Beauty Gift Pack containing a few of the little beauty luxuries that I love and would like to share with you (RRP $155).

Giveaway - Smooze, Eskal, WOW and Well Naturally food pack

ENTRIES CLOSED on 28/10/2012 midnight AEST. The WINNER of this Giveaway is Kelly Evans of Qld. Congratulations Kelly and thanks to everyone for entering the giveaway.

I have had offers to review some food products in the last few weeks and I wanted to tell you about some of products I liked and would use again. And lucky for you I have some products to give away for one lucky person to try as well.

Like everyone else, I am a lot more conscious of the type of food I am eating and giving my family these days.  However, that said, I am still always on the lookout for healthier treats that we can all share and enjoy. It is about moderation, not abstinence. Well that is what my grandmother lived by and given she lived until she was 97, who am I to argue.

So, if you are looking for some ideas, here are some treat alternatives for you:

1. Smooze Fruit Ice

These are the best thing I have ever tasted in my life. Better than chocolate. Seriously.

And just to be upfront about this. No, no-one is paying me to say that.

They are little triangles of absolute coconut goodness. The perfect Summer staple.

And the best thing is they are just made of fruit and coconut. Simple.

No science degree required to read all the small print. Bliss

In fact they tasted so good, that I asked my sister in a law, who is a dietician, to check the ingredients for me. She gave them the nod of approval. Like anything, too much of a good thing can be bad so possibly eating the whole box in one sitting, while quite understandable, is not desirable.

The Smoozes come in four flavours - Mango and Coconut, Pink Guava and Coconut, Pineapple and Coconut and Simply Coconut. they are 100% natural and have no additives. That is music to every mother's ears.

Four of these precious items will make it into the Giveaway Pack (if my fingers can be pried away from them). You can find these products at all supermarkets, health food stores etc and the important thing to know is that when you go into the supermarket they come looking like this - in boxes of 10. You won't find them in the frozen section but near the jellies, ice cream cones and toppings. And I am just warning you Melbourne shoppers - YOU BETTER LEAVE SOME ON THE SHELVES FOR ME.

2. Eskal Products

I was given three Eskal products to try. Gluten free vanilla tea biscuits, Nut free Butter and 100% dairy and gluten free dark chocolate with mint.

I really like this brand and have tried some of their other gluten free products such as the Deli Crackers and their wafers. Eskal has a good range of gluten free products to choose from at the Supermarket. The products I have tried are tasty and are permanently on my shopping list so I was keen to try these new products.

The Free Nut Butter is surprisingly good. It is made with roasted Sunflower seeds and a great peanut butter replacement.  Perfect for the morning's toast.

I tested the tea biscuits over a cup of tea with my sister.  They are vanilla flavoured and quite tasty, unlike most of the cardboard tasting gluten free biscuits I have tried before. I tend to stay away from biscuits when I can but these are small and perfect to have with a cup tea or coffee or to hide in your cupboard when your gluten free guests come over. And that list is growing daily.

I was champing at the bit to try the chocolate. I am not a fan of dark chocolate (I know..I know...) but I gave it my taste test. This chocolate was really quite creamy and I loved the mint flavour. I saved some for a few friends who are dairy intolerant and they really like it too. While chocolate is one of those things I could eat all day I would buy this every now and then as a treat to share.

You can find more about all the other Eskal products at their website. They have been manufacturing food for a long time and I really am a fan of their gluten free range.

THREE Eskal products will also go into the Giveaway pack for one lucky reader to try.

3. Well Naturally - No added sugar Milk Chocolate.

I was sent four different chocolate bars to trial. I know, the things I have to do just so I can let you know if it is good or not.

And as everyone knows you can never have too much of a good thing right? My friend actually lost 20k and ate one of this brands dark chocolate bars every day.

This brand has a lot of health products on the market which many of you would have seen and possibly tried before. I have tried their high protein mini bars as quick pick me ups after my 10k runs (oh ok then....just because I wanted a treat).

I am a little cautious about no added sugar products because of the sugar replacements used. However, in this case stevia is used as a natural sugar replacement. The stevia plant has a long history of use as a sweetener in South America.  I actually use Stevia from time to time in baking so I am comfortable with that and know the benefits.

The choclate which comes in different flavours is truly delicious, especially the fruit and nut. You can find out more about the products here.

There are SIX chocolate bars going into the giveaway for one lucky reader.

4. WOW Sugar Free Confectionary

The WOW stands for wonderland of wellbeing. I was sent four packets of Sugar free sweets to try with family and friends. Chewy Fruits, Buttered Candy, Fruit Candy and Eucalyptus Drops. There are 9 different flavours in the whole range.

Chewy Fruits are my hands down favourites, maybe because I have tried these ones before, a lot if truth be told.

You can buy these from supermarkets and various pharmacies around Australia.

This company is Australian owned and the products are also made here. The sweets are 99% fat free, cholesteral free and they have no artifical flavours. They are really tasty and I think they are great if you are looking for something sweet evey now and then.

The only thing to be very mindful about is that you should never have too much of these sweets all in the one sitting. Simply because the sugar substitute used can cause a laxative effect (well unless you are looking for that particular outcome of course). Moderation is a good thing.

There are FOUR packets of confectionary to add to the Giveaway Pack for one lucky reader.

THE PRIZE

One lucky reader will win a food pack which contains:

- 4 packets of WOW sugar free confectionary
- 6 bars of Well Naturally No Added Sugar Milk Chocolate
- 3 full sized Eskal health products - dairy free, gluten free, nut free
- 4 Smooze Ice fruit packs

Total prize is valued at $40

TO ENTER

Leave me a comment and tell me what you do to stay healthy (even if you have to tell me you put lettuce leaves on your vanilla slice, I understand unusual food combinations).

If you are unfamiliar with the Blog comment system you can send me an email to lilly@lillyslife.com

Disclaimer: Please note that I received samples of the above products to trial and my scales indicate that yes, I did indeed eat them all. And NO I am not showing you the proof. The things I do for people of the Internet. No money exchanged hands unfortunately but chocolate, and now Smoozes, beat money hands down anyway. The comments expressed in this post are purely my own, clearly.
