What was the first music you ever bought?

The very first album I ever bought was the Bee Gees.

I was 13 and I also bought a Michael Jackson single at the same time.

Although my musical tastes changed with the passing years, I've always had a bit of a soft spot for the Bee Gees.  Maybe because of their Australian links, the fact they wrote incredible songs on par with Lennon and McCartney and perhaps because Barry Gibb was so hot.

It was sad to hear about the death of Robin last week but it has been good to listen to all his music again and take a trip down memory lane.

Music can magically take us to another time and place like nothing else don't you think?

So, what about you, what was the first music you ever bought?

The first and only time I will ever saw the Bee Gees live - 1989 Melbourne

  1. As for me I think the first music I ever bought was Pink Floyd The Wall and Michael Jackson Off the Wall. A bit of an obsession about walls, lol. I also loved the Electric Light Orchestra too. Oh the 80s, I think the 70s were better no?

As for the Bee Gees, their early stuff was incredible when you go and listen to it. I really didn't like the Saturday Night Live period but then again I bet I could sing every word of every one of their songs at this time though. Those white satin pants, oh dear. And I also love Andy Gibb, fancy he has been dead for about 24 years....now I feel really old.

I'm so much older than you Lilly, that the first music I ever bought---(I cannot remember exactly) was either Sinatra or A Broadway Musical Album, or some stunning Classical music---Rachmaninoff, Mendelson or maybe Mozart or Bach.....
But there was Sinatra and Nat King Cole, and Jazz, and all kinds of different music, and lots of "Original Cast Albums--like "OKLAHOMA" by Rodgers and Hammerstein.....
You are so right. Music can transport you and even heal you...

  4. There was a record store about 4 blocks from my house and my sister and I used to walk up.  We would buy 45s.  I don't know exactly what the first record I bought was but I know it was from one of the Motown grous - either the Supremes, Martha & the Vandallas or Smokey Robinson and the Miracles.  I love all types of music - including the Bee Gees.

  7.  I remember seeing Alice Cooper in concert around 70-71.  The number of people at the concert was about 1000, maybe a little more.  It was a small place and he was not a huge hit yet.

  8. Yes Lulu was married to Maurice Gibb. that was a great song and I just saw that movie again the other day. She doesn't look any older either. 45s - they didnt last long did the? I bought Beatles records later (although I won a competition when I was 20 to go visit Abbey Road studios) but was never into the Rolling Stones and don't have a clue who Traffic are - I need to go and google them.

  13. I know John things have changed quickly. We can't afford to get too attached to anything. However, it goes full circle too as my daughter went to a party the other night where they had to take vinyl records with them. I got rid of all mine years ago and only have ones my uncle owned from the 50s. Check Berry et al.

  20. My first records were The Beatles' "Revolver" and "If You Can Believe Your Eyes and Ears" by The Mamas and the Papas.  A bunch of records by The Monkees followed.  I swear, I'll never get over Davy Jones' death...

  21. Oh yes, "Hey, hey we're the monkeys"...Davey Jones died, how did I miss that? The Beatles have about 4 albums in the top 10 albums of all time apparently. I watched their movies as a kid but never really got into them until I started following John Lennon.

  22. I think I had cassettes before records, remember them. I had the biggest west coast sound collection of anyone I know. The Eagles were my number one in the early days. Wouldn't it be great if we could all meet up and bring our first music with us, it would be seriously great.

  23. I still do have lots of casettes goodness knows why. I like the Eagles too and Jackson Browne too. Oh the list is long isn't it?

  24. Mine was a Bat out of Hell by Meat Loaf. The poor old Meat doesn't quite sound the same I hear either.

The Beatles, back in the early 70's. I think Alice Cooper was the first concert I ever went to. Music was such a big part of my adolescence. I loved The Partridge Family too:)

  28.  Lilly, this has nothing to do with the subject at hand.  But, I was curious if you remember me from David's Musings.  You visited my blog on occasion.  We both were friends with Matt of "Matt-Speak" fame.  I still miss him.  Anyway, I just wanted to say hi

    ReplyDelete
  29. You can tell we are all around the same age as the same artists keep cropping up, lol. Glad you are back again from your trip!

  30. Oh my David, I do recall. Yes! I still miss Matt too. Strangely I stumbled on his sister's blog only a couple of weeks ago. She hasn't updated it for a couple of years but I sent her an email. She replied and told me that Matt is right into photography now and doing well. It's strange when we make good blog friends and then they disappear. I will have to come by and visit you.

  32. A foggy distant memory but I do remember where it was.  It was weekly summertime concert event called the "Wild Goose".  Mostly local bands performed.  I think it was before the snakes but I remember some makeup.  Honestly I was more interested in the girl watching than the stage watching.

  37. That music may be worth something Kay, you better go and dig it out of the attic.
