What is your favourite Oscar moment?

For me, it would have to be when Australian Geoffrey Rush won the Best Actor Award for Shine in 1996.

Geoffrey was neither young or handsome in the way many leading actors are. In fact he was a struggling stage actor.

And of course, like the best of Cinderella stories, the Oscar changed everything for him.

As of November 2009, he is one of 22 people to have won the "Triple Crown of Acting": an Academy Award, a Tony Award, and an Emmy Award, and has also won the Golden Globe, the BAFTA, the Screen Actors Guild, and the Australian Film Institute awards

Over the years we have had many Australians nominated and many who have won - Nicole, Mel, Cate, Russell, Heath, Peter Finch. We have even had those who have tried to pass themselves off as Australians. I was just reading this site which has some interesting Oscar facts and learnt that Merle Oberon who was nominated for an Oscar in 1935 said she was Australian. However it turned out that this was what the studio and Oberon herself perpetuated to hide the fact that she was born in Bombay (now Mumbai), India, to unmarried parents (an Anglo-Sri Lankan mother and an unknown father).

So what about you, do you have a favourite Oscar moment?

  1. My favourite Oscar moments always revolve around the fashions and not the acting, oops...do you recall Bjork and when she wore the Bird outfit? No-one has ever looked that good again.LOL

  2. Ah, favourite moments... sad to say, my favourite Oscar moment is similar to my favourite UK football moment - when it's all over for another year and some limited degree of normality (whatever that is) can be hoped for as a feasible possibility from time to time - lol

  3. Hmmm.. always wondered why movies I enjoy watching never win. Referring to the likes of Dirty Harry, Terminator... am I shallow or are the Oscars an intellectual feign?

Maybe times are a-changing with the nomination of Avatar and District 9 in the best pic category :)

  4. The time A R Rehman walked up (last year) to claim the Oscar Music thing for Jai Ho, and the movie music. He stood up there and thanked his mother. Maybe that was a very non-oscary thing to do...

(I never did see Slumdog millionaire, but his music is always outstandingly great even otherwise.)

  5. I think I watch it more for the fashions, especially as it's prom dress season. However, it looks like Avatar is not sweeping all the awards!

  6. I liked watching all of it. People seem so happy to be there, and so genuinely proud of their co-workers.

Why did they leave Farrah Fawcett out of the Memoriam?

She died the same Day Michaae Jackson did, and she was famous in Hollywood for more than 20 years!

  8. I rarely get to watch the Oscars. It is on live here, but it´s so late and always on a Sunday night, and the next day I have to go to work. But I do get to see a summary of the winners the next day.
Hope you enjoyed it last night (for you it would be this morning, wouldn´t it?).

  10. Not one moment but in the past I've enjoyed watching Jack Nicholson but I didn't notice him there this year. The surprise wins are fun. You also get updated on which celebrity died last year which is sad.

I have a movie related photo on my blog today - take a look.

  11. As you know, I love the Oscars!

My very favorite moment was when Jessica Tandy won best actress for "Driving Miss Daisy". It was the first Oscar's I'd attended and that moment was electrifying. The entire auditorium CHEERED for her and that says a lot in this fickle, often youth obsessed business.

Saturday night was a BLAST but, sadly, no George sighting-- Everybody else was there, but your George was MIA :-(

    Have a great week Lilly.

  12. An all time favorite for me was Sally Field and following that Cuba Gooding Jr and Tom Hanks. I am a total movie nut and have watched the Oscars for as long as I can remember .. from childhood. The fashion is also a huge part of the night ... Kate Winslet's gown was my favorite.

  13. All Oscar's moment are fab! Especially when the stars are walking down the red carpet! I adore most of the dresses that are worn by the actresses!

  14. Wow some good moments there that I can remember like yesterday. And my favourite gown of the night was probably Helen Mirren. What a gorgeous woman!

  15. There are many many....But I would have to say when Hattie McDaniel won for BEST SUPPORTING ACTRESS for "Gone With The Wind". She was the first African-American to win an Oscar and it took another almost 30 years before that happened again.
When Hallie Berry won for "MONSTERS BALL" her speech was so moving because she honored all those Black women who came before her and paved the way...She was the FIRST Black actress to win THE BEST ACTRESS....A milestone!
And last night when Katherine igelow won for THE BEST DIRECTOR....I was very moved by that. The first women in 82 years to win this Award!

  16. I would have to say Halle Berry is mine plus when that guy called Jack someone or other fell to the floor to do push ups. Kathryn Bigelow's win was momentous as well.
